2024 Financial Planning

I use sofi and get 4.60%. You just need any dollar amount of direct deposit. Also got the $250 sign up bonus, only took like 30 days. I basically just put in enough money to pay large upcoming expenses like property taxes in there.

TBIL is currently paying 5.44%. It requires slightly more effort, but you can easily invest in this instead of a HYSA.

As in for your checking account, rather than it sitting in a chase debit account?

What bank do you use? Presumably itā€™s no difference if theyā€™re FDIC insured and youā€™re not storing a boat load of money thereā€¦

I think you may have replied to the wrong post or poster

I have also not had my morning coffee yet. I may need to revisit this question again in half an hour

Perhaps I misunderstood the string of dialogue, was thinking you were commenting on interest paid by banks on checking accounts and got a bit FOMO because I donā€™t think Chase gives me much of anything on my checking account

Dang, was not aware that Marcus was shutting down. I also have a CD there so will have to figure out where to route everything. Thanks for the heads up.

Ally Bank was the highest when I was looking to park my money. It was definitely a bait as theyā€™re pretty low now. Will check out Sofi.

My Credit Union pays 4% on their HYSA. I could chase a little higher yield by hopping around, but I choose to keep my main banking accounts with them. It pays well enough and itā€™s convenient to keep the current setup.

Their CD rates arenā€™t bad if you are willing to have your money tied up for a little bit. 6 month pays 5.06% APY and 12 month pays 5.39%

After I retired I shifted a chunk of my investments towards dividend ETFs. By far the biggest piece is in SCHD.

my credit union is actually called ā€œMY CREDIT UNIONā€ and I can assure you they do not have anything w rates you share.

Here is mine: Rates | Georgia United Credit Union

Christmas Club savings accounts are so cute.

Youā€™d think the Venn intersection would be TINY for people who are financially irresponsible enough that they canā€™t afford Christmas, but financially responsible enough that they structure mandatory savings for the same.

Those borrowing rates seem pretty good. I could not find better new car rates than these with my 10 minutes of googling. Good for GUCU and its members.

Iā€™ve banked with them and their predecessor since 1995. I had some shitty experiences with big banks before then, and was amazed at getting much better rates, lower fees, and better service. The only business Iā€™ve done with big banks occasionally since then is mortgages, and again experienced poor service.

Vanguard just offered me the chance to use their financial advisor at the low low cost of only $30 per $10,000 invested each year ($1,500 at $500k).

What a steal, I can get bad information for only a lot of money!

Schwab is the opposite: have enough assets with them and they give you some freebies including use of a financial advisor. Iā€™m having them do some modeling for me next month.

Discover has a card with no interest for 15 months plus 1% cash back doubled the first year and 5% in rotating categories.
If I charge $2,000+ per month that feels like a worthy improvement over my 2% on everything card.

Between my Amex (groceries), costco (with executive membership), and Amazon prime cards, i should be getting 4-6% on the vast majority of my purchases. The grocery store i usually visit also has 2% off when using their app.

The 5% rotations vary in utility and cap at like $75 for the quarter.

Great when it is grocery stores or gas stations or retaurants. Not as great when it is home imorovement stores and i only have so many projects.

Yā€™all are reminding me that I havenā€™t churned credit cards since being denied on my 4th in a month last fall.

Looking at a Bank of America Travel Rewards card, spend $1,000, get $250 as a welcome bonus + 1.5% cashback = $265.

Planning to buy a freezer soon, that should exhaust most of the spend requirement. Keep it open for just a day.

U.S. Bank Altitude Connect is pretty good. Spend $2,000 get $500+ in gift cards (itā€™s $500 but I think in the process of the spending I earned a bit more). Almost 2x what you are aiming for if you donā€™t mind not getting actual cash but gift cards.
