5 teams are pointless entering tonight’s games. All 5 of them made the playoffs last year.
(We can give CAR and WAS a break though, they’ve only played 1 game so far).

Carolina, Washington and Edmonton get out of the winless, pointless column. That leaves Nashville (0-3-0, waxed by Seattle 7-3) and Colorado (0-3-0), along with San Jose (0-1-2, lost to Dallas in penalties 3-2) and Vancouver (0-1-2, lost to Tampa Bay 4-1) as teams who’ve yet to win.
Filip Gustavsson becomes the 15th NHL goalie to score a goal, with a PPG at the end of Minnesota’s 4-1 victory over St. Louis.
Did anyone here have Calgary at 4-0-0 to start the season? Yeah, me neither.
Good celebration/memorial/dedication (what is the best way to say that?) to the Gaudreaus last night. Jackets could have won the game with better play from their goalie, another Elvis being Elvis game. The team this year is fun to watch which is a nice change from the last two years.
I don’t know if Korpisalo was the answer, and I don’t know if Tarasov is the answer, but I knew 5 years ago that Elvis was not the answer even if he had a statistically good rookie season.
At least he’s only there for … another 2 seasons after this one. ![]()
Crosby gets to 1600 career points (10th player in NHL history) and Malkin gets to 500 career goals (48th player in NHL history) in Pittsburgh’s 6-5 OT win over Buffalo.
Thought for betting next year: Anaheim has won its last 9 home openers.
Auston’s Quest for 70 finally kicked off as he scores a goal in Toronto’s 6-2 win over the Kings, which also moves him to just 484 career goals behind Alex Ovechkin.
Finally: Colorado. 0-4-0, giving up a season-low 5 goals vs. Boston, the last via the ENG. The last time the Avs started 0-4-0, they would tie the next game and sit 4-8-2 before ripping off 40-20-8 the rest of the way and making the WCF, so it’s not totally desperate yet, but still … oof.
All your favorite NHL teams are playing tonight, starting with Washington / Philadelphia at 6pm Eastern and concluding with Los Angeles at Vegas at 8pm Pacific. Speaking of Washington: Ovechkin scored his 1st of the season on Saturday night to move to 40 back of Gretzky,.
Winnipeg (vs. St. Louis) remains the league’s only unbeaten team and will try to run it to 6-0-0. Calgary (vs. Pittsburgh) took an OTL to Seattle on Saturday night to snap its undefeated start. San Jose (vs. Anaheim) is still winless, and won’t have Celebrini for at least 2 more weeks; Nashville (vs. Boston) is still winless after 5 games, but also pointless and has led twice for only 10:29 this season and has no injury excuses at all.
And … I know, this is going to come as a real shock … Columbus has injuries. On top of Jenner being out much of the season, Kent Johnson [upper body] is expected to miss “significant time” and Erik Gudbranson [shoulder surgery] is out for “significant time” as well.
I better watch a few Blackhawks games while they’re on ESPN+ for the rest of October.
16 games last night, 97 goals. [That extra goal for winning in the shootout doesn’t count here.] 22 of those came in 2 games, including this bizarre score by Tampa to complete the 2-point conversion.
Winnipeg makes it 6 in a row to start the season with a 3-2 win over St. Louis. Calgary also stays undefeated [in regulation], beating Pittsburgh in penalty shots. Nashville finally breaks into the win column, 4-0 over Boston.
McDavid gets his 1st and 2nd, but the Oilers still lose to Carolina 3-2 in OT.
If you’re excited about the 4 Nations Face-Off and want to go see a game, or 2, or maybe even all 7, tickets go on sale next week. Of course, since it’s Ticketmaster your favorite seat has probably already been sold to someone else and you can pick it up on Ticketmaster’s resale marketplace for 3x the face value, plus Ticketmaster’s fees. Ticketmaster, the common man’s site for affordable entertainment!
Hoping LAK is just tired from their road trip. Not that being home has helped them that much in the recent past.
Good news is no Clippers in the house, so a less hectic arena schedule, and hopefully better ice conditions. And, would be nice if they fixed that up during this latest refurb of Staplo.com.
We’re about to find out just how deep the Blues lineup really is.
Update on Ovechkin: 1 tonight, 2 for the season. Now 39 behind Gretzky.
Toronto lays another egg, 5-1 to St. Louis. Someone must have told Matthews, Marner and the rest of the gang “treat this like it’s a playoff game.”
Winnipeg needs OT, but goes to 7-0.
Shea Theodore is the latest Vegas player to get a big contract from the team, and I think the first one to get another contract after getting an initial big contract (originally 7/36.4). Also might be yet another Vegas player with a big contract that gets moved late in the contract.
The San Jose Sharks became the first NHL team in over 60 years to not have a win after their first 8 games of the season in consecutive seasons.
Columbus vs. Edmonton. Blue Jackets up 3-0 early in the 2nd, Merzlikins in net for the Blue Jackets, Skinner in for the Oilers and he’s allowed 3 goals on 6 shots.
Will Skinner keep that up? Will Merzlikins and Columbus continue their long-running pattern of imploding in the 3rd period and utterly pissing away the game? Come back in a little while and find out!
McDavid out injured ![]()
Normally that’s not an impediment to Columbus and Merzlikins crapping a game away, but tonight … was different.
Columbus 6, Edmonton 1. Early reports are that this is “not serious” - but he also had an injury last season that was “not serious” and apparently hampered him much of the back half of the season, which is why he labored to only 32-100-132 in the regular season and then a measly 8-34-42 in the postseason.
… and then there were no more unbeaten teams, as Toronto does in Winnipeg 6-4.
That hot start Utah embarked on is starting to get undone. Not just a loss, a 5-4 OT loss to San Jose to give the Sharks their 1st win of the season.
Macklin Celebrini is still waiting for his 1st NHL win.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I had Brandon Montour as the first defenseman in the league to record a hat trick this season.
OK, that’s a lie. I might have bet on him never having one - but, he’s got one from last night’s Seattle 8-2 beatdown of Montreal, and it was a natural hat trick to boot. Ottawa atoned for that American atrocity against Canadian by kicking the crap out of St. Louis 8-1.
San Jose starts the comeback from the early season hole in the standings, 4-2 over Los Angeles. Maybe they don’t need Celebrini to win after all.
Ovechkin gets #s 4 and 5 - or, 855 and 856 if you prefer. Also moves him back to 484 ahead of Matthews, who has one fewer goal in 2 more games this season and needs to get on it shortly if he’s going back on 70-goal pace again.
Jets look really good this year. Kyle Connor is an absolute beast out there.
